study on ANPR & traffic guidance

Study on how to avoid cut-through traffic & trucks by implemting an ANPR system and variable message signs

2021 - 2022

In collaboration with TML, we supported the city of Vilvoorde in developing smart digital solutions to reduce congestion and heavy traffic in the city center. This project focuses on ANPR technology (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) and dynamic signage, complemented by tele-informatics systems for real-time driver guidance.

The key objectives are to:

  • Divert through traffic, especially heavy vehicles, away from the city center.

  • Implement a smart parking guidance system to direct local traffic to designated parking areas efficiently.

  • Reduce congestion and improve the city’s appeal for pedestrians and cyclists, encouraging sustainable mobility.

Our role in this project included:

  • Technical analysis: Assessing Vilvoorde’s needs, proposing scenarios, and recommending the best technologies for traffic management and parking guidance.

  • Feasibility studies: Analysing setups in collaboration with the city administration.

  • Market evaluation: Comparing technology providers and drafting procurement documents for cost-effective and impactful solutions.

The project is a phased effort, culminating in a scalable model and practical guidelines for small and mid-sized cities facing similar challenges. By addressing congestion and promoting softer mobility options, this initiative aims to create a more accessible and livable urban environment. MORE LION contributed its expertise in analyzing system requirements and integrating innovative IT solutions to support the overall implementation.
